I've heard talk of them, but because I am a gas guy I don't know much about them. I assume they are used to add more charcoal if needed. Are they a must have?
Did your new Weber not come w/ a hinged grate? I thought that was standard now. And yes they are for adding charcoal and it does make it much easier. My old Weber did not have them so it was a pain to pull the grate off and add charcoal. Yoy can pick one up pretty much anywhere they sell Weber.

nope. It didn't come with one.
Where do they sell Weber? I don't think Wal-mart or Target has it. I'll bprobably just have to buy online

The platinum came with hinged grill grates... makes it much better. It also came with charcoal briquet holders. Well worth the cost if you didn't get them. Holds plenty of briquets to the side for indirect grilling. You'll love them, trust me.
If you set things up right, you can place the hinges directly above the briquet holders and add briquets whenever you need.
You thought you got something for free???? hahahaa... now you get to order all the accessories... LOL!!!
Chimney, Hinged Grate, Briquet Holders, "You've only just begun"... <=== sung the tune of the Carpenters... :D
Sharky,
I was just at a Home Depot. They sell Weber products. They had the hinged grate, chimney starter, parafin starter blocks and a host of other grilling parafinalia. I hopr yoy have a store in your area. I bet Lowes will have them also.

My Lowes has Weber accessories, but I have never taken note of exactly what they have.

I live roughly 3 miles from Home Depot! I'll be there later today!
