I was just looking at Ebay and came across some silicon oven mitts for about 20.00. Supposedly they are good to 500 degrees F. Anyone heard of, or used these? OXO makes these particular gloves, but there were many others.

I own a pair of 500F silicon mitts. They work as advertised and do provide a high level of confidence in handling hot pots and pans. I've used them to handle my on grill cast irons with no problems. These are ambidextrous mitts with one finger for the thumb and a broad finger for the rest of the hand. Both sides are ribbed and cover the wrist up to the forearm.

I'd really like a pair the five finger gloves I've seen Alton Brown use on Good Eats but haven't found a source.

I have seen three finger silicon mitts that look a little weird but might improve dexterity over a mitt.

I've also used polymer coated supported five finger work gloves for turkey fryer and grill work. The five fingers provide dexterity for handling and the oil easily wipes off.

This is a site that explains silicon mitts:

Go to Lowes/Home Depot and get a pair of welding gloves for like $10-$12. Its what I use. You have all 5 fingers as well. I dont know the heat resistance but they are VERY usefull, specially around open flames. No more singed fingers trying to flip a steak over high heat.

***Edit***

We have a 5 finger heat resistant glove named the "Ove Glove" got as a gift. It looks like its knitted from yarn but its pretty good. http://www.ovenglove.net/
Only thing I have against it is if there is any splashed liquid on your hands it goes through pretty quick cause its a loose weave. It does claim that it "can withstand extreme heat up to 480 degrees!"

I agree with wnkt in that I don't see any difference between them and the welding gloves other than they look nicer LOL

IMO the Silicon gloves are easier to clean than the welding gloves, if you happen to get some sauce, or other juices on them
