View Full Version : To Cover, or Not to Cover??

Question for y'all....

Since recently purchasing my dream grill, I want to take care of it as much as possible to extend it's life to accommodate us for many years together.

We have a fully covered deck that my beloved Weber sits away from the elements of rain, and brazing sun, but does not protect it from bird, and bat droppings, and dreaded dust.

After my last clean up, and washing of the exterior I hauled out a heavy duty plastic black cover that protects most of it...this is the largest grill I've ever owned so it lacks full coverage over the second shelf area covering the propane tank area, but I figured most was better than none.

When I proudly went out to undrape the glorious grill I noticed that condensate had left "small" pools of water (more like larger drips) on the deck directly around the grill!

I kinda freaked. I am now worried that I may need a different cover than plastic. I even though it's 80% all stainless steel, I worry that the non SS parts will get rusty from the bit of condensate created by the cover.

Would a cloth cover be better suited?? This is something I never thought to look at when purchasing the grill. Or am I being paranoid?

I haven't seen this addressed before here, so what do y'all do with your precious babies?

Thanks for your input,
Mingo

Hey Mingo

I've got a silver b thats not stainless and have yet to cover it up in 2yrs. No problems so far. Not to sure what bird droppings would do to it over time. Mine is also on a deck but my deck has been turned into a screened room.
If its in plain sight you might want to lock it to the deck somehow otherwise you might get a rude surprise when you come home from work one day. My cousin had his weber stolen off his back patio  it was only 3months old.

Ohhh, that'd really frost my taters!! Would home owners cover grill theft ;)

We live way out/up in the mountains, so they'd have to be really motivated to haul it off....but we do have some strange folks most would call neighbors...I could see some o'them helping themselves to it...but I'd be on the hunt with the first whiff of meat cooking.

I'm thinking I might just buy a couple of king size sheets and try my sewing skills to at least keep it covered from the critter droppings...my guy thinks I could hand stitch them no prob....Yeah, RIGHT!

Thanks Swamp!

Did you get a Weber cover for your grill? That should do a fine job of protecting it. The cover needs to breath. A solid plastic cover will not work well.

Curious if homeowenrs insurance covers this. I had the same thought, I am pretty darn close to a $1,000 invenstment in a grill and would probably cry if I went home one day and it was gone.

TomKatt is right, plastic covering does not breath and traps the moisture within it. Weber makes great covers for their grills, I would highly reccommend them over plastic.
