So I head over to my folks for a birthday bbq and as usual I get the grilling duties. Now I don't mind grilling but I hate using other peoples stuff. His grill needs to be replaced badly. On each side the flame gets about 8" high in about a 4" radius adn then there is very little heat everywhere else. Makes it tough to have everything come off at the same time when you can only cook 2 burgers at a time. :(
Luckily I smoked up some ribs beforehand and made some baked beans so I had that going fo me. :) The ribs and beans came out awesome. I did make some turkey burgers but they were nothing special as I didn't have sharky's famous turkey-ricotta recipe. ;)
So I ask you all:
Do you get grilling duty at other people's houses?
Do you enjoy it?
Share some stories..........

I can not recall getting tasked with grill duty at a friend's house, but at a get together in a park or something like that I usually end up at the fire. I have grilled at my parents, when my Dad wasn't home of course...LOL

I'm always on grill duty! I don't mind... but I do like to have good equipment to work with!

Come to think of it, I've had grill duty since I was a Junior in High School. That is where my grilling fetish came from. Camping out on the beach in Guam with a bunch of buddies, I became the GrillMaster!

Any time I get away from my own grill and kitchen, it is a little strange. Trying to cook with other people's equipment is always a little akward for me. Luckily, I drive a truck, so many times, the people will tell me to be sure and pack my grill and anything else I will need to feed them with. I'm usually the DG. (designated griller)

I've got to agree. I like using my own stuff to cook.

I think I am a little different. While I like using my stuff to cook... I enjoy it no matter where I am!

I love to cook but I am also a perfectionist and want everything to be perfect. Sometimes it's tough to live up to the expectations.

Show me a flame, a grate or spit, and some meat and I'll try. I can't always achieve perfection but usually can get a good degree of edibility.

Doesn't a true Grill Master have to be able to work with the tools at hand?

I'm pretty much the designated grill dude. Some of my friends only invite me to their parties if I will man the grill. I am fairly lucky in that most of my friends have fairly decent grills, however, I use my smoker if I'm doing anything that needs smoking. I have been told by most that my chicken, brats, dogs and steaks are to die for, but my burgers need work :) I have finally found out what I do wrong on the burgers though. I tend to press them a little much. I plan to perfect them this year.

I typically get the job...Sometimes my dad beats me to it, but I generally get the spot.

I don't care what you hand me. I will attempt to grill stuff over stones and turn the meat with a stick if needed.
