It holds heat very well. The pit is about 1/4 inch thick, I did not drop the firebox down to provide more heat with less wood. It works well. Just an idea I wanted to try. I have a large damper that seperates the firebox from the smoking chamber which allows me to regulate heat if it tries to get too warm. I can maintain 225 all day long with the pit using about half the wood I would have to use with a dropped firebox.

800 pounds! Wow, that's alot of metal and plenty of mass to hold the heat. I'd imagine it'd smoke some real nice Q!
