I prefer mine medium/medium well right now.
I used to only have a well done steak, but my taste has changed over the past few years... for the better of course!
Medium to medium rare usually, kinda between the two I guess.

medium rare?
I gotta be honest, I'd worry about the food being safe to eat at that low!
I generally go medium. Ideally it will kinda look like a neapolitan ice cream sandwich, except with chocolate at both ends. When I do tri-tip it's seriously blackened on the outside and pink through the center 1 1/2" or so.

Interesting!
How do you cook your tri-tip? grill or smoker?
Grill. Depending on size, about 8-12 minutes on each side (all four of them :) ) over medium heat. Seasoned typically with garlic pepper and oregano, and sometimes I'll work in a Worcestershire marinade. The ends get pretty done and have that charbroiled taste, as does the very outside of the entire roast, while the remainder is tender and juicy. Cool thing about tri-tip, the outside gets a flaky texture when it's cooked like that. And if it's good quality meat (which my local supermarket is actually pretty decent at) the knife practically falls through it. Nice 1/2" thick slices...

I love Tri-tip!
There is a place in California called the Meat Locker (in Thousand Oaks) that has an awesome tri-tip sandwich. I purchased some of their seasoning, but have never been able to duplicate the taste!
I'll try your method and see how it works out!

Don't get me started. My in-laws (and subsequently my wife) like to cook the shit out of everything. She's never liked steak because her dad turned it into cardboard. I've got her liking it medium now...even the chicken they cook is freakin dry - I try to tell them just because it's juicy doesn't mean it isn't cooked.

0425,
That's funny. Sad but funny. I do however feel your pain. My folks don't season anything and cook it until you barely recognize it. I've been cooking for myself since I was 16. The first meal that I cooked was tacos out of the box. :)

I never knew what a steak tasted like as a kid. I knew what Heinz 57 sauce tasted like... Even on T-bones and Fillets! My father cooked it that way, so that's how I liked it. I still like to buy a really cheap steak and burn it all to hell so I can throw some Heinz 57 on it. But only once in a blue moon.
I still don't like really juicy chicken. I get nervous. I like it a little dry... even without sauce. My wife hates it, so 9 times out of 10 I cook it her way and just char the outsides of mine a bit:-)
