Almost the exact day that I found out about the Maverick ET-73, I ordered one and had it rushed to me overnight in order to see just what the hype about this remote, dual-probed (one for the meat; one for the pit), large readout smoking thermometer was all about.

Going from nothing to anything would have been great in itself, but this thing has made Q'ing much more of a lazy man's task. I just sit back and wait for the beep. Or, should I say "beeps"?

This thermometer will beep when your grill temp drops below a temperature that you set. It comes from the factory defaulted to 176*.

This thermometer will beep when your grill temp rises above a temperature that you set. It comes from the factory defaulted to 176*.

This thermometer will beep when your meat temp reaches the desired temperature that you set. It comes from the factory defaulted to 176*.

It also has a count-up/count-down timer for the convenience of letting me not forget to mop.

I must mention that the advertised 100' range may not be all that it is cracked up to be. This does depend on walls and things between the receiver and transmitter. I also hear that this may be a wide defect that has been address and these "bad" ones can be sent back to the company for a full exchange at no chage. I will update this post with that information if I find that to be the case.

Overall, even with the range trouble, I don't see how I ever cooked without this thing. I used to always wonder if stuff that looked good and tasted good was really cooked long enough and a lot of time I would end up drying the meat out to in efforts to make sure.

Not anymore. Thanks, Maverick.

Since this post, I have actually bought two more of the Maverick ET-73s and I am still a true fan of these tmometers.

6 foot probes are supposed to be available from Maverick in December, I believe.

OK. I never got mine before (thought the wife ordered it and didn't).

I was at Williams Sanoma yesterday and bought one from them. Turns out, it's actually the Maverick ET-72

I can't wait to try it out. I think I will cook a butt or something this weekend!

Only difference is the ET-73 has two probes, one for the meat and one for the pit.

Makes a difference when smokin', not sure it'll matter when grillin'. I love mine and haven't had a bit of trouble with it. I'm sure you'll love yours too.

With the Maverick I can always get a good night's sleep even when smoking for 17 hours or so...

I didn't even catch that!

I got a good deal on this one so it's no prob. I'll probably get the ET-73 if I like this one then. I'll just pass this one on to my wife for the stove! lol

Reviving this helpful thread because I have a question. I'm wanting a thermometer and it looks like the Maverick is the choice of champions. On the ET-73 dual probe, can you use the "grill" probe for a 2nd type of meat.... say you're cooking pork and chicken? Or is there something that only allows it to be used for the grill temp?

I guess I could bring our ET-8 out to the grill in the rare case I'm cooking 2 different meats, but it would be nice to use the dual probe. By the way Sharky, I also bought our Maverick ET-8 at Williams-Sonoma. Didn't even know it was a Maverick until I saw the photos at thegadgetsource.

You could use the grate probe to check the temp of a second meat, but I just put the meat probe in the one that I know will finish first, and stick it in the other one when the first is done.

I need the grate probe for cooker temps.

NuTemp makes a remote thermo with 3 probes, but you have to buy them separately.

I am with St Pete...your meat is either going to finish around the same time or far enough apart that you are going to know which one is going to finish up first. Also the "smoker" probe is blunt, so it might not be too easy to push it into the meat. However it looks like the polder probes would work with the maverick.

Oh yeah and the alarms on the receiver have different ranges for the smoker and the meat so this might also be a factor in using it that way.

Wow, almost 4 year old thread. Not seeing much showing up for wireless thermometers (on the forums), and the reviews of most have not been that great. All things considered, the Maverick looks like the one most tried on Amazon. Not a bad price. It has a wide range of reviews though, but most being 3-4-5 stars...

The only other option, is one from Oregon Scientific, which talks, the AW131, but I'm not sure I really need the talking feature.

One thing that the description says about the Maverick ET-7, is that you get to set the temperatures, whereas on most others, you select the meat, then the doneness levels, which I've heard are sometimes not very accurate.

Anyone have any other recommendations? I think I'll probably pull the trigger on the ET-7, but may wait a bit before placing the order... My Weber Summit grill will be coming next week, so I'm trying to get prepared for when it arrives!

On my ET73, the food probe jack on the transmitter box went screwy on me and wouldnt register anything. I just use it for smoker temps now, it still helps IMMENSELY not having to go in and out all the time checking the fire.
I have a cheap-o wired thermometer that I use for the meat and when I have to throw on some more charcoal or smoking wood I check the temps on the food.

Hmm...well, I went ahead and bought what they are calling the ET-7. It will take a few weeks before it gets here, so we'll see. I just can't believe that there isn't a better performer out there. Shouldn't be that hard to make, since the only thing that has to survive high temperatures would be the probes...

My ET-73 is still going strong after all this time... pretty good investment.

I've purchased a Stoker remote thermo that I'm able to monitor and adjust via the internet when I'm not at home. But the ET-73 remains my #1 remote thermo.

Now with my stick burner, there's none of that remote thermo thing... gotta keep yer eye on the meat. Small hot fire... needs a new log every 45 mins or so. Makes a great show for doing ribs or chicken, but very tiresome for brisket or butts.

However, the meat off a real stick burner is second to none for real BBQ Flavor. WSM is a real close second.
