Hey Tony,

Actually Sonny's isn't all that bad. And on Friday's they have all-you-can-eat ribs and chicken for $10. Those are spares, not baby backs. The new one on Park Blvd. in Pinellas Park is ok.

Rib City Grill on 66th St just south of Tyrone Mall is good.

Pit Boss BBQ on 19 in Palm Harbor is good.

I'm not sure about Memphis Style at those places though. There used to be a place on Ulmerton in the Largo Square Mall called Paradise Pig. Now they had all authentic Memphis style BBQ. Even had Fried Dill Pickles. Not like your recipe, but slices. That was damn good!

Tony -

When was the last time you've been to Kojaks down the road from your work on Gandy?

I haven't been in ages, I think it's time I went again.

Would anyone like to meet there for Lucnh one day?

StPeteBBQ?

Better than Kojacks is Uncle Rodney's on Gandy about a quarter mile west of bayshore... The pork melted in your mouth, and they even served some decent collards. Corner of Gandy and Macdill.

We may have to work out a lunch double feature...

I didnt see any oysters though

LOl.. I think we can get STPeteBBQ to skip the oysters this time!

I use to pull double feature taste test all the time while in college, I think I can squeeze one in now. maybe order a rack for the 3 of us from kojacks and then finish the meal off at Rodneys!

I have been looking for a good dry rub rib joint all around St. Pete... My wife works in tampa and stoped at Jazzys on the way home from work- brought me home some of the best ribs I've had In a long time (1 hour drive, still great- I could smell the smoke on her when she got home...) These things must have been smoking all day, meat so tender and flavorfull .... I cant remember the cross street, but Im sure it could be found doing a search online....

Jazzys is at Waters and Veterans Expressway. It's GREAT food and Jazzy is a former Buc football player!

Can't say Im a big fan of the Sonny's... When ever I go somewhere I have to get the sampler... Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and beans... Cant say I was overly impressed with anything sonnys had to offer- maybe it was just my particular visit... Seems like I left still hungry and unsatisfied- I remember I had some sort of sandwich with the thinnest slice of meat on it... Havent been back in years.... should I try it again???? As for chilis... I tried them.... again maybe it was just my visit, but they really tasted like fish.. I like fish, but I do not want my ribs tasting like salmon... I tried ribcity on 66th street- those were good... I also recently tried fred flemmings bbq on 4th street in St. Pete... disappointed in those, however the bruswick stew was ok, and the beans were good.... I guess im partial to my own BBQ......

IMHO Sonny's (or Rogers, rip) all-you-can-eat sliced pork (with Smokin and Mustard Sauce for my tastes) is among the best* in our Nation. For me the pork is the main attraction while the hot fries, corn-on-the-cob, and corn bread sides completes the meal.

After two ro's or so I'm satisfied and not leaving hungry. I do leave with a large unsweet tea to go.

I will continue my search for ribs of Chili's quality*. I'm continually surprised that I don't find that a bbq resturant has the best. Of course my palate might be such that I wouldn't be able to detect an off-taste. Though if I did I might be tempted to ask for a replacement.

*For what it is worth these opinions are based solely on my experiences with bbq encountered during my travels. Your experiences will be different.

Everyone I know knows the best bbq is in my backyard :) but it is nice to be able to sample the competition every now and then.

I agree, everyone has there own tastes.. Mine lean towards savoring the meat- with out or with very little sauce, I believe a properly smoked\rubbed meat needs no additional flavor... Now you guys got me hungry... Its 8am and already have a strong craving for ribs!!!... I will try Sonny's again sometime this upcoming month... New years resolution: Visit every BBQ joint in Tampa bay....

Kartsdiver- Have you tried the little bbq place on 580 in Dunedin? little shack right next to the pinnellas bike trail? Out door seating only, so go when its nice or get togo.... I believe they are only open on weekends. Pretty neat, you can watch the pitmaster work his magic while you eat..
