Howdy all, so i'm new to grilling and have an extremely old, but works well, propane grill that i want to use regularly..Its got the bottom portion as well as the top portion of grill (double stack), and i have a few questions on how to cook steaks (please bear with me, i'm new).

1. Do you put your steaks on the bottom grill closest to the fire, or on top?

2. For strip steaks, how hot do you want the grill?

3. Any ideas on what timeframe to cook medium steaks at?

Got more questions but my wife is calling, thanks guys.

Aggie,

Welcome to the board! Keep involved and pretty soon you are going to be addicted to grilling...

As far as your propane grill goes....is the upper tier a smaller grate than the lower? If so, that is just a warming grate, usually not used for cooking but for keeping food warm...

With steak you want a hot fire. Cooking time depends on various elements, but rule of thumb says 7-8 minutes per side for a medium steak. But instead of going by time, go by temperature. I good investment would be a probe thermometer, which you can find anywhere in the home goods section of a department store.

Eventually, you'll be able to tell when a steak is done just by feel, called the "poke test." The rarer the meat, the softer (squishier...) the steak. As it cooks, it hardens.

Stick around and throw out more questions. There are some great cooks who post frequently on this board that will be more than willing to answer your questions....
