When I'm running late and trying to grill something quickly without a lot of prep work, I use this failsafe mix

Olive oil
salt
pepper

I've used this on steak, salmon, chicken, ribs, etc... it's not bad at all.
It really is a good base for just about anything you want to cook.

Here are some ideas to change it up a bit..

instead of pepper, use lemon-pepper seasoning.
add some fresh rosemary
worcestershire sauce
soy sauce
honey
ren wine vinegar
fresh chopped garlic
green onions
tobasco
seeded jalapeno
cilantro

The list goes on and on. I've actually made a pretty good chicken marniade by combining ALL of what I mentioned above and let it marinade for 2-3 hours.

The five staples in our house are:
olive oil
salt
pepper
onion powder
garlic powder

Depending on what we are cooking we add to the base but we usually start with those five.

You can't go wrong with that.

I've only started to use Olive oil in the past few years.
Before it was soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, lemon and Hot peppers.
